Finding the operating system version installed and on DVD (Solaris)
I saw this post about finding the version of a Solaris DVD - very interesting. It relies on the fact that the DVD contains all of the packages in a unpacked format, and then goes looking for /etc/release contained within the SUNWsolnm package. His example looked like this:
# cd /Solaris_10/Product/SUNWsolnm/reloc/etc
# cat release
Solaris 10 3/05 HW2 s10s_hw2wos_05 SPARC

This also translates into doing the same thing on an installed system:
# cat /etc/release
Solaris 10 6/06 s10s_u2wos_09a SPARC
